Reach Out and Read: Akron Children's Hospital

Become a volunteer reader! Volunteer readers are needed in several Akron Children's Hospital Pediatrics (ACHP) offices located throughout Northeastern, Ohio and the Locust Pediatric Care Group office at the hospital, to read to children in the waiting room . No minimum number of hours is required to volunteer. You can read once a month or every day!
Having volunteers read aloud in the waiting rooms makes the experience of going to the doctor pleasant for children and parents. By reading to children, volunteers model book-sharing techniques for parents and show them by example that reading aloud is an enjoyable experience for the family. And importantly, children who are introduced to books at an early age are better prepared for success in learning.

For more information and an online application, please visit our website at: www.akronchildrens.org/read or email Melanie Dyer, Reach Out and Read Program Assistant at mdyer@chmca.org.

How do I prepare to be a volunteer?
We have four volunteer trainings throughout July.  While they are not mandatory, these sessions are highly recommended, as they will provide you with a chance to become more comfortable with your activities, ask any questions you may have, and meet the other volunteers you will be working with.  Please fill out this form whether or not you plan on attending (you can indicate that you are unable to attend) with this link: http://bit.ly/GG9Training. The two Cleveland are in the evening at Trinity Cathedral on Thursday, July 17th or at the Beck Center for the Arts in Lakewood on Tuesday, July 22nd.  The two Akron trainings are also in the evening at the John S. Knight Center on Tuesday, July 15th or the Akron Summit County Public Library Main Branch on Wednesday, July 23rd. You do not have to RSVP to attend, but it would help us to plan breakout sessions.

What if I don’t know an answer when I’m volunteering?
You will receive a volunteer handbook at the volunteer training or through your email in mid-July. This handbook gives you additional information that the Gay Games 9 staff feel is important that you know as a volunteer. If you have a question during your volunteer shift, there will be a Volunteer Captain at each venue or a Gay Games 9 staff member that is available to answer your questions.  In the event that you cannot find a Volunteer Captain or a Gay Games 9 staff member, please call the volunteer hotline 216-479-6473.

What is expected of me as a volunteer?
We expect you to be polite and courteous even though you may be extremely busy, as you are the face of the Games for many of our visitors.  We also expect you to show up 15 minutes before your shift so that there is time for you to report to your check-in station before the start of your shift.  You must also sign the volunteer waiver before your first shift.  Finally, if you have to cancel your shift, please do so 24 hours in advance by emailing volunteers@gg9cle.com.

What do I wear when volunteering?
You should wear your official 2014 Gay Games volunteer shirt with any type of neat shorts or pants, plus comfortable walking shoes. If you are serving outdoors, please remember to be prepared for any weather (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, raincoat, etc.).

Who do I contact for more information?

Have questions or want to get involved prior to the Games? Contact Lauren Schoenewald, Volunteer Intern, at 216-479-6473 or at lschoenewald@gg9cle.com.
