Akron Canton Foodbank: Operation Orange

Operation Orange (Sept. 11 & 12) is the Food Bank's third annual volunteer marathon. They are in need of volunteers during the midnight hours of Sept. 12: 12a-2p; 2a-4a; 4a-6a and 6a-8a - 50 per shift, please. There will be music, food (Chipotle and Starbucks) and plenty of projects on hand! Schedule your group by visiting the Foodbank's website and a Volunteer Coordinator will contact you to confirm your group's information. If your group is larger than 25, or if you would prefer to call us during business hours (M-F, 8-4), we can assist you in scheduling your group over the phone. Individual volunteers can simply log in to the Volunteer Information Center to schedule Operation Orange volunteer shifs.

Kickball tournament to support Camp Quality

Hello (UA Student Org)!

Is your student organization interesting in supporting children with cancer through Camp Quality, Ohio? This year the Fraternity and Sorority Life community will be supporting Camp Quality through their annual Songfest event. To raise money, we will be hosting a kickball tournament on March 15^th from 1:00-4:00pm in the SRWC! The admission cost is $5 to play on a team or to watch. Teams are 6-8 individuals. The tournament is open to ALL student organizations on campus and we would love for you to participate! There will also be FREE pizza and drinks available at this event. The winning team of the tournament will receive a FREE ice cream party on behalf of the Songfest Committee. Songfest is an 80-year University of Akron fraternity/sorority tradition. Students sing, dance, and act out a routine to raise money for charity.

Camp Quality is a summer camping experience and year-round support program for children with cancer. Many difficult physical and emotional challenges face a child, and his or her family, when battling cancer. At our summer camps we have developed an important type of “therapy” . . . we like to call it Smile Therapy! With a laugh in their hearts and smiles on their faces, Camp Q. Kids find themselves capable of more than they may have dreamed possible.

Responsibilities

•    Coordinate efforts to create a safe community garden green space that is fully handicap accessible at Trinity UCC’s north area on Main street
•  Respond by email to meeting requests
•   Maintain and create a calendar of steps needed to produce the safe green space
•   Identify volunteers to work on project with specific assignments
•  Work with the Senior Pastor for items not yet identified
• Recruit North Hill volunteers representing the diversity of our community
• Identify a volunteer grant writer
• Identify an intern to work on the project

Time required

• Maximum of two (2) hours per week (most work done away from church i.e. Home, etc.)
• February to July 2015 ( mutually agreeing on specifics of position by end of February)

In doing so, we’re helping to increase graduation rates across the country, and changing the lives of the students we serve.

City Year is hiring graduating seniors interested in 10 months of full-time service in low-performing schools across the country. As a City Year AmeriCorps member you will serve from the before students arrive to school until all after-school programs are finished, building relationships with students to act as a tutor, mentor, and role model.

The position is not a one time project but a full-time experience for 10 months. At the completion of the program the service members receive a $5,735 education award to use as repayment for students loans or continuing education costs. Other scholarship opportunities are available to City Year alumni. 3,000 volunteers need and corps members can apply to serve at 1 of 26 U.S locations.

RAKE Akron Blanket Drive

The #RAKE Akron Blanket Drive distribution is on November 29^th from 12-4pm at Luigi’s parking lot in Downtown Akron! RAKE Akron, Random Acts of Kindness Everywhere, is a movement to get people across the globe doing something for others! They want to reach out to the homeless youth in Akron. They would also like to document the distribution on film, so volunteers are needed for filming! RAKE Akron want to talk to the children; find out why they are homeless and what we can do to help. Cash Explosion at the Hard Rock Rocksino

Volunteers are needed this Saturday, November 22, 2014 to represent the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank at the Cash Explosion event being held at the Hard Rock Rocksino, Northfield Park. Northfield is a small town 20 miles south of Cleveland, and 20 miles north of Akron!  The Rocksino is on the grounds of the NorthfieldPark racetrack, at 10777 Northfield Rd, Northfield, OH 44067.

• Volunteers will collect donated items and load them into the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank truck. This task will occur outside and volunteers will need to be able to lift items into the truck.

UDS All-Star Training Club Winter Bowling

United Disability Services All-Star Training Club is seeking volunteers to assist athletes with intellectual disability bowling a perfect game. Reach Out and Read: Akron Children's Hospital

Become a volunteer reader! Volunteer readers are needed in several Akron Children's Hospital Pediatrics (ACHP) offices located throughout Northeastern, Ohio and the Locust Pediatric Care Group office at the hospital, to read to children in the waiting room . No minimum number of hours is required to volunteer. You can read once a month or every day!

Having volunteers read aloud in the waiting rooms makes the experience of going to the doctor pleasant for children and parents. By reading to children, volunteers model book-sharing techniques for parents and show them by example that reading aloud is an enjoyable experience for the family. And importantly, children who are introduced to books at an early age are better prepared for success in learning.

Halloween Family Fun Day

Saturday, October 18 the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank is requesting volunteers to represent the Foodbank at a Halloween Family Fun Day being held at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. There are two available shifts, 8:30-11:30am and 11:00am-2:00pm.

Leggett CLC is looking for college students who are willing to come to our school and buddy up with a student who is struggling with reading. We need students to commit to be a buddy to a student and come to the school once-twice a week and spend 20-30 minutes reading with their student buddy. You will read with the same student each week throughout the semester. Volunteer Opportunities with UDS All-Star Training Club

United Disability Services is seeking volunteers for its sports program, All-Star Training Club (ATC). ATC was established to provide an integrated sports program for individuals with or without disabilities where everyone, regardless of ability, is encouraged to participate on the field of athletic competition. We provide a 1:3 ratio for our athletes at all of our sports.

This great program could not exist without our wonderful volunteers. We are looking for enthusiastic people with a positive attitude to volunteer for our sports clubs. We are looking for volunteers who will be responsible for demonstrating the activity to our athletes and keeping records. Volunteers needed: Saturdays – Team Bowling League; Sundays – Flag Football League; Sundays – Cross Country League (times and locations vary).

Patient Care Companions wanted in Akron/Canton area! Patient Care Volunteers provide emotional support and practical assistance to enhance the comfort and quality of life for patients, families, and caregivers. These services include being available for companionship, listening, simply being there, sharing a walk, reading books or newspapers, watching television and preparing meals. These volunteers also offer practical support often needed by Hospice patients, families, and caregivers. These duties may include picking up needed supplies, light house cleaning, basic yard work or grocery shopping.
